Looking after your new tattoo is essential to ensure you avoid infection and it settles well. Tattoo skin problems can occur for various reasons, including infections, allergic reactions, and improper aftercare. If you are worried about your new tattoo then there are a number of best practices to keep in mind:

1.  Consult your tattoo artist

If you notice any issues with your tattooed skin, it’s important to consult a professional tattoo artist or a dermatologist. Ideally go back to the artist who did the work for you so they can assess the situation and provide the right guidance for treatment.

2.  Consider antibiotics

If you have an infection then you may need to visit your GP and get a course of antibiotics, it is also possible to get antibiotic creams if your doctor believes this the best form of treatment for your infection.

3.  Keep it clean

The most important thing about caring for a new tattoo is cleanliness. The area needs to be kept clean and dry and only washed with non-fragranced mild soaps and shower gels. Avoid harsh chemical cleansers and pat gently dry with a clean towel.

4.  Remember your aftercare instructions

After getting a tattoo your artist will provide you with clear aftercare instructions. This information is important for keeping your tattoo in the best condition and ensuring it stays clean and free from infection. You may have to avoid swimming pools, saunas and some physical activity as you allow your tattoo to heal.

Aloe vera and your tattoo

Aloe vera gel can be a great choice for caring for your tattoo. The natural moisturising and soothing properties of the gel can help in the healing process and ensure your skin is able to heal.

We recommend opting for a pure aloe vera gel like those in our range. High-quality pure aloe vera products with no added colours or fragrances are the most natural choice for your skin. It also helps to minimise the risk of any irritation or allergic reactions. You should only apply the gel in thin layers to your tattooed skin to help soothe and aid the healing process.

Aloe vera gel is not a cure for infected or damaged skin, if your tattoo appears infected is it important you get advice from your doctor and obtain the correct treatment.
